DietPal (“DietPal”, “we”, “us”) is a voice-first calorie and nutrition tracker operated by Aura Apps. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. By using the DietPal app you agree to this policy.
1. Information we collect
- Account information. When you sign in with Apple or Google we receive a user identifier and, where you allow it, your name and email address. We use this to create and secure your account.
- Meals and nutrition data. The foods you log, their calories and macronutrients, timestamps, and any notes you add.
- Profile & goals. Details you enter to personalise targets — such as sex, age, height, weight, and activity level.
- Voice and text you submit for AI analysis. When you log by voice, your recording is uploaded solely to transcribe it and identify the foods. See “AI processing” below.
- Usage & diagnostics. Basic app events and device information used to keep the app reliable and understand which features are used.
- Purchases. Subscription status. Payments are handled by Apple or Google — we never receive or store your card details.
2. How we use your information
We use your data to provide the core service: logging meals, assigning calories and macros, tracking progress toward your goals, syncing your data across your devices, managing your subscription, and keeping the app secure and working. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.
3. AI processing, USDA, and voice deletion
To turn a spoken or typed meal into food entries, we send that voice recording or text to our AI processor (OpenAI) for transcription and food identification. Your voice recording is used only to produce the transcript and is deleted immediately afterwards — we do not keep the audio. Calorie and macronutrient values come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s FoodData Central (a public database) or our own dish reference where USDA has no match; those numbers, not the recording, are stored on your log. AI analysis only runs after you grant consent, which you can turn off at any time in Settings → Privacy.
4. How your information is shared
We share data only with service providers that operate the app on our behalf, under agreements that limit their use of it:
- Google Firebase — authentication, database, file storage, cloud functions, and analytics.
- OpenAI — transcription and food identification of the voice/text you submit (audio deleted after transcription, as above).
- Apple & Google — sign-in and subscription billing.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
5. Data retention & deletion
We keep your account and log data for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Delete account & all data. This permanently removes your profile, logs, and stored files from our systems. Voice recordings are deleted right after transcription and are never retained.
6. Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored on Google Firebase’s managed infrastructure with access controls. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
7. Your choices & rights
- Turn AI meal analysis on or off in Settings → Privacy.
- Access and edit your logs and profile in the app.
- Delete your account and all data in the app at any time.
- Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, or erase your data — contact us and we will help.
8. Children
DietPal is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. International data transfers
Our providers may process and store data in countries other than yours, including the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above, and where appropriate we will notify you in the app.
