Calories come from USDA FoodData Central — not a photo model, not a barcode hunt.
After we have the text, the clip is deleted. Your log keeps the transcript and macros.

“Salmon, rice, side salad.” Sixty seconds. Then you walk away.
Recents copy stored USDA macros. No second AI pass. No extra quota.
A ring for the day. Weekly trends when you ask. No shame copy.
AI only identifies the foods you said. It does not invent calorie counts. We look each item up, scale to your portion, and write macros onto your meal log.
USDA
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s public nutrient database. Dietitians use it for calories, protein, carbs, and fat per 100 g. This is our first lookup for steak, fries, eggs, milk, Coke, and most grocery foods.
Table
Some plates are not a clean USDA match — a café latte, homemade stew, a takeaway burger. We use a curated table of typical portions, then scale to the grams we estimated.
Estimate
If nothing matches, we use Atwater factors (protein × 4 + carbs × 4 + fat × 9). The log marks it so you can edit the food or grams.
| Food | Portion | kcal | P / C / F | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled beef steak | 170 g | 461 | 44 / 0 / 31 | USDA |
| French fries | 110 g | 343 | 3 / 45 / 17 | USDA |
| Sauteed vegetables | 150 g | 105 | 3 / 12 / 5 | Table |
| Coca-Cola, 2 glasses | 500 g | 210 | 0 / 55 / 0 | USDA |
How it works
Step 1
You speak or type
“Salmon, rice, and a side salad” or “fish and chips.” Sixty seconds of voice, WhatsApp-small.
Step 2
USDA assigns the numbers
AI names the foods. Calories and macros come from USDA FoodData Central — or our dish table if USDA has no match. Those values are stored on your log.
Step 3
The audio is gone
After transcription the clip is deleted. Your log keeps the text, calories, and macros — not the recording.

A ring for calories. Bars for protein, carbs, and fat.

Speak it once. Macros stay on the row.

A quiet look at how the days stacked up.

You speak or type the meal. AI identifies the foods and a portion in grams. Calories and macros come from USDA FoodData Central — the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s public nutrient database — not from a photo model. If USDA has no match, we use DietPal’s dish table. Estimate is last resort.
It is the USDA’s free nutrient database. Each food has calories, protein, carbs, and fat per 100 grams. DietPal scales those values to the portion you ate and stores the result on your meal log so recents and edits stay consistent.
Food names, grams, calories, protein, carbs, fat, and which source we used (USDA, table, or estimate). The voice clip is deleted after transcription. The transcript and macros stay on your log until you delete them.
Yes. Tap the mic and say something like “oatmeal with banana and honey” or “a chicken Caesar wrap and a latte.” A pending row appears at once and fills in when analysis finishes.
No. The clip is uploaded only long enough to transcribe, then deleted. What stays on your log is the text and the nutrition numbers.
Tap the meal and edit grams or the description. DietPal recalculates. If something is unclear, you get one clarifying question — not a quiz.
